Training
:
Intact
Males:
What can I do?
- Learn
about dog behavior and the effects of testosterone in
males
- Train
your dog and keep training through distractions. Train
for a solid recall, and a solid "leave it".
- Learn
to redirect your dog - do not correct your dog, but refocus
his attention
- Learn
about "rude" behaviors that your dog may start
doing and how to recognize them, and stop them.
- Have physical
control of your dog: use a Gentle Leader or a Prong collar,
so that you can always redirect his head.
- Always
know what your intact male is doing and looking at, and
be ready to redirect, if he starts a stare-down with another
male.
- Feed your
male a main portion of his meals while you are outside
on walks or around other dogs. For each piece, make him
work by doing basic obedience commands (Sit, Down, Watch,
Shake Hands). This will help make sure that when outdoors,
or in areas with distractions, he will be focused on you.
