Training : Training for Shows: Equipment

A good source for quality show equipment online is www.bowwowshop.com.

  1. Show Collar: You will need a thin unobtrusive collar for your dog. There are several types out there including thin choke chains made of hexlinks (snake-style) or jewelers-link. You can also use nylon collars of a color that blends in with your dog. We like using a jewelers-link show choke chain.

  2. Show Leash: You will also need a thin show leash to go with your collar. It should be short enough to wad up in the palm of your hand as you stand your dog in the ring, but also long enough so that your dog can extend itself in motion. Nylon leashes are strong and don't break easily, but we also like 1/4" short leather leashes with well-trained dogs.

  3. Bait: Most shows will allow you to use bait, but always check to see what the judge allows before entering the ring. It's much better to know ahead of time that bait is not allowed than to be disqualified from the ring because you didn't know! Bait is any yummy food that perks up your dog. Dried or sliced liver is always a favorite, but you can use anything from chopped chicken to cooked steak. You will only be giving your dog little tidbits and making sure that it's teeth are not covered up in food slime, so choose your bait accordingly! Also, most show participants and judges deplore those who drop their bait in the ring, so make sure that you use bait that will stay in your hand and not crumble and fall to the floor.

  4. Crate for your dog: You will need a safe place where you can put your dog when it is not in the ring being judged. Use metal crates for dogs that are not past the chewing phase. We like to use soft crates for older dogs that are well-behaved and will settle in their crates easily, not to mention that they are *much* lighter to carry!

  5. Bowls: Remember to bring a water bowl and food bowl for your dog.

  6. Chairs: Bring a camp chair that is light and easy to pack so that you can set it up ringside to watch and learn during the judging of other dogs.

  7. Your Attire: Always dress up a bit to show your dog in the ring. Most AKC shows recommend slacks and a tie for men, and skirts, dresses, or dress pants for women. Remember to wear something that has pockets in which you can carry your bait.

  8. Proof of Vaccination: Always bring proof of your dog's vaccinations for Rabies, Parvo, and Distemper. If you titer your dogs, bring a copy of your most current titer results showing adequate immunity.

  9. Brushes/Rakes: For that last minute grooming before you go in the ring.

  10. Your Dog: Make sure your dog has been thoroughly bathed, dried, and brushed out with no mats or tangles anywhere on its body before taking it into the ring. Nails should be trimmed short, ears should be squeaky clean, and teeth should be sparkling white. We also suggest very lightly trimming the hair in between and on the bottom of their toes.
