Holistic Care : Heartworm in Dogs

Heartworm infection in dogs can easily be prevented, but heartworm preventatives are not without risk. Some of the newer heartworm preventatives are capable of causing liver damage or immunologic problems in animals that are susceptible, as well as certain breeds such as shelties and collies.

The primary consideration in choosing a heartworm preventative should be providing adequate protection for your dog during those periods when they are likely to be infected (mosquito season) while minimizing unnecessary harmful chemicals in their bodies. In most areas, heartworm preventatives do not need to be given all year long.
