Holistic Care : Diet

We have alternated between feeding a raw diet and a premium-quality dog food over the many years we have owned our Leonbergers. Feeding a raw diet takes planning, and more importantly, needs to be balanced enough to ensure that your dog obtains all the nutrients it needs for optimal growth.

When feeding raw, we follow the Natural Rearing Diet as detailed by Juliette de Bairacle Levy, a long-time Afghan breeder, whose dogs are renowned for their longevity and health. The Natural Rearing Diet has been followed by numerous highly successful dog breeders such as Topmast Newfoundlands, Sterling Basset Hounds, and others, for over thirty years now with good long-term results. We completely understand that not everyone has the time or ability to feed a raw food diet, so we have also included a section on premium bagged dog food. Not all dog foods are created equally, so please do read on to find out more.
