Frequently Asked Questions
What
kind of dog is that? A
Leonberger...L-E-O-N-B-E-R-G-E-R!!
Do they bite?
Not unless you call them
names:) Leonbergers are usually very slow to bite, unless very severely provoked.
To announce a threat to your property or home, they will generally sound
fierce by initial low growling escalating to loud thundering barks, which normally
cease once you let them know you are aware of the situation. Where
are they from? Germany,
originally. What
breeds went into their creation? It
is thought that they have the St. Bernard, Newfoundland, and Great Pyrenees in
their background. How
much do they weigh? Males
can weigh anywhere from 110 lbs to 165 lbs and females can range from 75 lbs to
130 lbs. How
are they with kids? Most
Leonbergers innately have a fondness for children. Any breed of dog can, however,
develop an aversion to children if teased or taunted by them on a regular basis.
Without adequate supervision, Leonbergers can bump into and knock over young children
merely by virtue of the sheer size difference. With gentle guidance and consistent
leadership from you, Leonberger puppies can easily be taught to respect the youngest
members of your family from an early age.
Do they eat a lot? Depending
on age and activity level, Leonbergers can eat a lot especially as they go through
puppy growth spurts. The quality and digestibility of the food you feed them also
affects how much they will eat.
That's a lot
of coat! Do they shed a lot? Yes!
Large amounts twice a year for about six weeks each time, and in moderation the
rest of the year. Expect to find some Leo hair on all your belongings and inside
your home year-round. How
often do you have to brush them? At
least weekly, including trimming nails and cleaning ears. With older dogs, a thorough
grooming session can take up to a couple of hours. Do
you keep them indoors? Yes,
they have access in and out of our house at their pleasure, and all three of them
sleep inside our home at night. When we are home, they are usually inside the
house, lying right next to us. What
do you do with them in the Texas summer heat? Do you shave them in the summer
time? We take them
swimming at area lakes to cool down, and they spend the rest of their time indoors
in air-conditioned comfort during the summer. We do not shave them at any
time of the year. Dogs have a natural process of regulating their coats during
various times of the year, and shaving dogs can cause unnecessary damage to their
skin. |
