About
Us : Our Kennel Name
I
was born and raised in Africa and spent a lot of time in Botswana, land of the
Kalahari Desert, which also happens to be home to the rapidly disappearing Kalahari
Lion (Panthera Leo). Combining my African heritage with the leonine characteristics
of the Leonberger led me to my kennel name of "Kalahari".

What differentiates the Kalahari Lion from all other African lions is that
it is taller at the shoulder, lighter in color, and males have black rather than
dark-brown manes. Due to conflict with local cattle farmers around the perimeters
of the Kalahari Transfrontier National Park, increased lion hunting is causing
the number of Kalahari lions to dwindle very rapidly.
